COSA’s protective service case managers in Delaware County recently completed Basic Mediation Training. After learning about mediation they identified mediation skills and strategies as a much needed component for interventions. COSA’s programs aim to enable senior citizens to maintain their independence and dignity remain in their own homes and communities with appropriate support services, and to deter or prevent unnecessary institutionalization.

Protective service case managers investigate reports of abuse, neglect, exploitation or abandonment of persons. These situations often involve conflict, either with the elderly person they’re checking on or between family members, neighbors or friends. The mediation training focuses on effective communication skills, problems solving strategies, collaborative decision making methods, and agreement building techniques. These skills enable case managers to manage and reduce conflict with the goal of providing the best service to the elderly individuals they serve.
